Empress Theatre present Celtic Stars Coig
Sunday, March 17th
Cape Breton’s Còig, one of Canada’s premiere Celtic groups, returns
to the Empress with their electrifying show on St. Patrick’s Day, Sunday, March 17, 2019 at 7:30 p.m.
The band’s driving tunes, haunting songs, and infectious energy provide an unparalleled musical
Còig (Ko-ig) includes super-musicians Chrissy Crowley (fiddle), Rachel Davis (fiddle, viola, vocals), Darren
McMullen (guitar, mandolin, mandola, banjo, bouzouki, whistles, flute, vocals) and Jason Roach (piano).
Each were originally solo artists who came together for the Celtic Colours International Festival tour in
2013 and now perform together extensively.
With a combined total of more than 30 nominations and awards, each of Còig’s talented members have
released their own successful solo albums and have toured both at home and abroad.
The band’s latest recording, Rove, includes original folk compositions, contemporary arrangements of
traditional Celtic tunes and Celticized covers of modern songs. The recording also sees the group move
from playing all instrumentals to including vocal tracks, performed by both Davis and McMullen.
Their debut recording, Five, was released in 2014 and earned them the 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award
for Traditional Album of the Year, the Music Nova Scotia Award for Traditional/Roots Recording of the
Year, and the 2015 East Coast Music Award for Roots/Traditional Group Recording of the Year. That
album was followed by 2015’s holiday recording, Carols.
Còig’s music is a unique combination of influences that could only come from these four players—
traditional tunes performed in non-traditional ways.
