Alberta to Open More Competitions for Next Phase of Renewable Electricity Program

According to the province, the first round of the program attracted about $1 billion of private-sectors investment to Alberta.

The provincial government opening a second and third auction-style competition this spring for the next phase of its Renewable Electricity Program. According to the province, the first round of the program attracted about $1 billion of private-sectors investment to Alberta. The Alberta Electric System Operator -- that administers the program -- says the second round will see companies partnering with Indigenous communities to provide 300 megawatts of renewable power. Each bid will have a minimum Indigenous equity component which may include an ownership stake in the project or land use agreement. The third round will add another 400 megawatts following the open competition format from the first round. Successful bidders will be announced by the end of the year. -Sam Borsato
