Arts Funding Resolution Defeated By City Council

Lethbridge City Council has defeated a resolution that would have provided some possible financial assistance for the arts community.

Lethbridge City Council has defeated a resolution that would have provided some possible financial assistance for the arts community.  Councillor Jeff Coffman presented the motion yesterday.  He proposed cancelling a $30,000 committment to the Lieutenant Governor's Distinguished Arts Gala, that'll be held in Lethbridge next year, in order to put the money back into a contingency fund.  It would then be available as a potential grant to support local arts organizations.  But members of Council voted down the idea because they felt the City should honor a contract agreement it has with the Lieutenant Governor's Office to host the Gala Awards Night.  Last week the Allied Arts Council and the Southern Alberta Art Gallery asked City Council for financial assistance to make up for cutbacks in provincial grants. - Bryan Jeannotte
