Phase Two construction at the ATB Leisure Centre on the west side in coming along swimmingly.
Lethbridge City Council given a progress report Monday (Mar. 5) on Phase Two construction at the ATB Centre. Construction began on the second part of the west side leisure centre in May 2016. Project Coordinator, Ashley Matthews says there are some pretty special features to this building, one being the "glazing" on the windows which adjusts to compensate for the sun glare. Matthews says the aquatic centre and all the rest should be open or close to opening to the public by this time next year. Construction itself should be finished by this December and the building turned over to the city right after that with staff training to take place and equipment testing until the likely March 2019 opening. Matthews says everything is on time and on budget. Phase Two will be the future home of the Cor Van Raay YMCA. This project consists of the detailed design and construction of the remaining leisure components which will adjoin to ATB Centre - Phase One. At approximately 256,000 square feet, Phase Two will include an aquatics centre with waterslides, lazy river and whirlpools, multi-sport field house, fitness centre, indoor track, gymnasiums, child minding area, indoor playground, locker rooms, commercial lease spaces, facility support and amenities. Matthews says the admission pricing for using the leisure facility hasn't been set yet, however similar facilities in Alberta charge roughly $10-12 for a full-day admission for adults and $5 full-day for kids. He notes all that will be decided in the months ahead. - Pat Siedlecki
