Lethbridge Police have charged two people with physically abusing a toddler.
Lethbridge Police have charged a woman and her boyfriend with the assault of a two-year-old boy following an investigation into an anonymous tip reporting suspected child abuse.
On September 21, 2017 police received a tip that provided information indicating a young child may be in danger. Police and Child and Family Services immediately attended a Lethbridge residence to check on the welfare of a two-year-old boy and noted visible injuries to his face and neck. The toddler was taken to Chinook Regional Hospital where further examination revealed additional injuries all over his body. The mother told police the child had fallen, but medical staff determined his injuries were not consistent with a fall.
The boy’s 26-year-old mother and her 32-year-old boyfriend were subsequently arrested and charged.
The woman has been charged with one count of assault and the man with one count of assault causing bodily harm.
The man was remanded in custody to make his first court appearance today. The woman was released on a promise to appear in court Sept. 29 and has conditions prohibiting her from having contact with the man or child.
Neither accused can be named in order to protect the identity of the child victim.
The boy is currently in the care of relatives.
Anyone who suspects a child is in danger or being abused, is encouraged to contact police immediately at 403-328-4444 or Child and Family Services at 403-381-5500.
