Lethbridge-Medicine Hat Region Sees Unemployment Rate Jump to 5.4% in January

Some not so good news when it comes to the local jobs front. More people in the area were looking for work to start off 2019.

A spike in the local unemployment rate to start off 2019.

Stats Canada releasing its latest jobs numbers Friday (Feb. 8). The Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region currently sits with an unemployment rate at 5.4%.

That's a jump from 4.5% December. It's also the highest jobless rate in this region in several months.

Red Deer has the lowest rate in the province right now at 4.4%.

The national unemployment rate inched up slightly to 5.8% last month. Stats Canada says over 66,000 net new jobs were created across the country in January, many of those in the service sector.

The Alberta jobless rate sits at 6.8%, the highest outside the Atlantic provinces.
