Lethbridge's Safe Consumption Site Opens Amid Spike in Opioid Overdoses

The facility, on 1st avenue south, officially opened as of Noon on Wednesday, February 28.

Lethbridge's supervised consumption site is officially open. The facility, on 1st avenue south, is the first in North America to allow drugs to be injected, taken orally, snorted and inhaled. ARCHES is responsible for operating the site and Managing Director, Jill Manning, says they were given the go ahead to open at noon today (Wednesday, February 28).  She says staff have been in a rush to get the facility open especially with a spike in opioid overdoses this past week - at least 52 since the weekend. Manning says it might take a while for users to get used to the idea of a supervised consumption site but is hoping it catches on quickly, adding staff and outreach teams are in the community trying to spread the word. -Tina Giesbrecht
