Food Banks Canada releasing its national usage stats for 2018 and the numbers locally are not the best.
Hunger comes with no age barriers as Food Banks Canada released its annual report on hunger bank usage during the past year.
While children represent only 20% of the national population, 35% actually rely on food banks. Locally, the Interfaith Food Banks Operations Manager, Neil Heaton says they've seen a rise in kids accessing their service. "Our children client population is about 39%, many of whom have trouble going to school on a full belly."
Heaton adds it is unacceptable in a country like Canada that children are living like this.
He also notes 50% of those accessing food bank services in Lethbridge rely on social assistance or disability supports. "I think a lot of clientele are on fixed incomes. I think just the way the economy fluctuates so much, it really affects their ability to support themselves on a daily basis and become a food bank client."
On the positive side, only 3.2% of local seniors rely on the food bank while nationally it runs around 6.3%.
