More Than Half of Lethbridge's 2018 $4.5 Million Snow Clearing Budget Already Spent

Mother Nature has made things very difficult the past two winters on the City of Lethbridge snow clearing and ice control budget.

This winter has put a huge dent in the City of Lethbridge snow clearing and ice control budget. Infrastructure Services Director Doug Hawkins told City Council this week, in 2017 the snow clearing budget went over by about $550,000. He says so far this year, more than 50% of the $4.5 million budget has already been spent and it's only early March. The City's snow clearing budget runs from January to December, a full calendar each year. Close to 16,000 truckloads of snow has been hauled off city streets since late December with more to come as crews continue to work. Hawkins gave kudos to all the city and contract crews which have been working around the clock for weeks and weeks to keep traffic moving on main roadways around the city. Up to last weekend's latest storm, Lethbridge has recorded around 130 cm of snow since just before Christmas. - Pat Siedlecki
