Premier Rachel Notley Holds Emergency Cabinet Meeting to Discuss Response to BC Bitumen Proposal

The BC NDP wants to restrict increased shipments of diluted bitumen while it conducts more spill response studies.

Premier Rachel Notley holding an emergency cabinet meeting Wednesday to discuss what she calls "political game playing" by the BC government. The BC NDP wants to restrict increased shipments of diluted bitumen while it conducts more spill response studies. It would create more uncertainty around the already delayed, federally approved, Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain expansion project. Notley says Alberta contributes mightily to the economic security of every Canadian, including every British Columbian, and in return expects its fellow citizens to play by the rules and "allow us to get a fair return on our products." She says the BC government is threatening to "thumb its nose at this principle and for that, there needs to be consequences." Notley and her cabinet are discussing various economic and legal tools they can use in the dispute, with the Premier saying interprovincial trade in electricity could be one avenue to explore. -Tina Giesbrecht
