A pair of Lethbridge groups have been working hard over the last several months to have the controversial practice banned not only in Alberta, but across Canada.
The Alberta government has put together a Conversion Therapy Working Group to make recommendations on how to most effectively ban the controversial practice.
Conversion therapy tries to change an individual's sexual orientation from homosexual to heterosexual by using either psychological or spiritual interventions.
Last fall the local YQueerL Society and Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group started a petition to put an end to the practice. Health Minister Sarah Hoffman says conversion therapy is damaging and hateful and has no place in this province.
The group members will be supported by an Alberta Health staff secretariat as they prepare their final written report.
Meanwhile, the Alberta Liberals are calls for an immediate ban on the practice. Leader David Khan says the party will not accept the NDP's proposal to study the issue until this July.
