Record Breaking Crops for Southern Alberta Sugar Beet Growers this Year

The sugar beet harvest in southern Alberta is over for another year and growers are enjoying record breaking crops.

The sugar beet harvest in southern Alberta is over for another year.  Piling grounds started wrapping up toward the end of October with the final work being done in early November. Alberta Sugar Beet Growers Executive Director, Melody Garner-Skiba, says harvest started late due to snow and wet weather but it all came together in the end. She says growers managed a record-breaking 32 tonnes per acre this year, adding the average yield over the past five to seven years has been about 28 and a half tonnes per acre. She says conditions were ideal for sugar beets this year with a hot summer and the use of irrigation, as the beets like both heat and water. The sugar beets are delivered to Roger's Sugar in Taber for processing and refinement. -Tina Giesbrecht
