Residents who attended an open house Tuesday saw the final landscape and streetscape designs for the redevelopment of 3rd Avenue South between 4th & 8th Streets.

The current design for the downtown roadway, between 4th and 8th Streets, was showcased Tuesday (Mar. 12) at an open house at City Hall.

Project Manager Craig Richter says part of this plan is to make the portion of 3rd Avenue South more pedestrian friendly, noting it would basically be known as a destination street. "So what that requires is for us to remove some of the roadway space to make room for more pedestrian space. So we are actually taking it down from four lanes to three lanes (of traffic). That will be a single lane in each direction with a dual left turn lane in the centre."

The budget for the project is just $10.83 million, approved by City Council as part of the latest Capital Improvement Program.

Richter says it'll give that portion of the 3rd Avenue South a whole new look and feel with new lighting, landscaping, wider sidewalks, those reduced travel lanes and more. "I think people are now understanding the intent of the project, to make it an area that people want to go to walk around and enjoy the space and nearby businesses, not just driving through on a roadway."

There is also an online Construction Impact Mitigation Survey residents go to and fill out. You can also see the final designs and get more information on the project here: 3rd Ave S. Redevelopment

Richter also notes before the actual streetscping and landscaping can take place, underground work will have to happen first to replace some of the pipes which are more than 100 years old.

Work is expected to start in the spring of 2020, with completion in the fall of 2021.
