Volunteers Fill Stockings for Patients Spending Christmas at Chinook Regional Hospital

Lethbridge area residents, who have to spend Christmas in the hospital, will be getting a special delivery Monday morning. For more than 40 years, Operation Christmas Stocking has made sure every patient receives a sock full of goodies. South Zone Volunteer Resources Manager, Chris Fujita, says nurses will be handing out 516 stockings at Chinook Regional Hospital this year. They'll be filled with small gifts like toothbrushes, crossword puzzles, hand lotions and treats with children getting items like crayons and colouring books. All stockings were sewn, donated and assembled by Alberta Health Services volunteers and local Quilters Guilds.  Letters of hope, written by school aged children in Lethbridge, will also be part of the stocking's contents. The program was started by nurses at the old municipal hospital and has been an annual tradition ever since. -Tina Giesbrecht
